Tarot card game

The tarot card game is a trick-taking game played with seventy-eight cards, including twenty-one trumps and the Excuse. Very popular in France, it usually uses the “tarot nouveau,” whose trumps are decorated with genre scenes, rather than the allegorical figures of the Tarot de Marseille. For several centuries this playing use was the only use of the tarot; divinatory reading did not appear until the late eighteenth century.
