Trump

In the trick-taking game of tarot, a trump is one of the twenty-one numbered cards that beat every card of the four suits. These same cards are what the esoteric tradition calls the Major Arcana. The word recalls the tarot’s origins as a game, whose earliest Italian names, trionfi, meant “triumphs.” In a divinatory context, people generally prefer to speak of arcana or cards.
