Tarot
Also tarot deck · divinatory tarot
The tarot is a deck of seventy-eight illustrated cards, made up of twenty-two Major Arcana and fifty-six Minor Arcana, used both for trick-taking games and as a tool for divination. Born in northern Italy in the fifteenth century under the name carte da trionfi, it was first a courtly pastime. Its divinatory and symbolic use developed in France in the late eighteenth century. Tarot readers today see it as a language of images that opens up a perspective on a situation, without claiming to fix the future.
