Detriment

A planet is in detriment, or in exile, when it sits in the sign opposite its domicile, such as Venus in Aries or Mars in Libra. Tradition holds that it acts there against its nature, in a thwarted or awkward way. Modern astrologers tend to see it instead as an unusual form of expression that takes some learning, without judging it negative in itself.
