Capnomancy

Capnomancy is divination by smoke, from the Greek kapnos. One watches how the smoke of a fire, incense or offering rises: straight and light, it was held to be favorable; heavy, beaten down or scattered, unfavorable. In antiquity it often accompanied sacrifices. In some contemporary practices, the smoke of an incense stick or burned herbs is still interpreted, in a spirit more meditative than predictive.
