Square spread

Also nine-card square · 3 × 3 spread · grid spread

The square spread lays out nine cards in three rows of three. It can be read by rows, by columns, along the diagonals or as a cross, which multiplies the combinations and correspondences. A common convention links the columns to past, present and future, and the rows to the planes of thought, emotion and concrete fact. It calls for some fluency, since the wealth of its cross-readings can also scatter the interpretation.
