White sage
Also sage · Salvia apiana · sage bundle · smudge stick
White sage, Salvia apiana, is a plant native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, used by several Native American peoples in purification ceremonies. Burned in bundles, it has become one of the emblems of smudging in Western spirituality. Its popularity raises concerns about overharvesting and respect for the cultures it comes from; common garden sage or other local plants are often used instead.
