Papus

Also Gérard Encausse · The Tarot of the Bohemians

Papus, the pen name of Gérard Encausse (1865-1916), was a French physician and occultist, a major figure of Belle Époque esotericism and founder of the modern Martinist Order. In 1889 he published The Tarot of the Bohemians, a kabbalistic and numerological synthesis presenting the tarot as a universal key. In 1909 he also published Le Tarot divinatoire. His books, illustrated notably with cards by Oswald Wirth, long served as a reference in France.
