Bottom card

The bottom card is the card at the very bottom of the deck once it has been shuffled and cut. Some card readers turn it over to read the backdrop of the consultation in it: an underlying influence or a theme that runs through the whole reading. This practice is far from universal: many tarot readers never look at it and stick to the cards of the spread.
