Book of Thoth
Also Egyptian origin of the tarot
The Book of Thoth is the name given, ever since Court de Gébelin in 1781, to the hypothesis that the tarot was a work of secret wisdom devised by the priests of ancient Egypt and attributed to the god Thoth. Taken up by Etteilla and then by many occultists, it is not supported by any historical source: the oldest known tarot decks are Italian and date from the fifteenth century. It remains a founding myth of the esoteric tarot tradition.
