The suits in cartomancy are the four families of the standard deck, hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades, each of which tradition assigns to an area of life. In the most widespread French reading, hearts speak of love and home, diamonds of news, money and dealings, clubs of success and support, spades of obstacles and worries. The proportion of each suit in a reading already sets an overall tone, before the card-by-card analysis. The exact meanings vary from one author to another.
