Gaze of the figures
Also direction of gaze · orientation of the figures
In tarot reading, the gaze of the figures refers to the attention paid to the direction in which the characters on the cards are looking. Many readers of the Tarot de Marseille hold that a figure facing left suggests the past or the inner life, one facing right the future or action, and one facing forward the present moment. The gaze also serves to link neighboring cards in a reading, which then seem to answer or ignore one another.
