The Emperor
Also Arcanum IV · Arcanum IIII
The Emperor is Major Arcanum IV of the tarot, numbered IIII in the Tarot de Marseille. It shows a ruler in profile, seated on or leaning against his throne, scepter in hand, with an eagle shield at his feet. Upright, it symbolizes stability, authority, structure, protection and mastery of practical matters. Reversed, it is read as rigidity, authoritarianism, abuse of power or, conversely, instability and lack of grounding. It is the counterpart of The Empress.
