Woodcut

Also woodblock printing · xylography · stencil coloring

Woodcut is the printing technique used to make Marseille-type tarot decks: the design is carved in relief on a wooden block, inked and printed, and the colors are then added by stencil. The method accounts for the thick lines, bold colors and misaligned color areas of old decks. Modern restorations often debate what reflects a symbolic intention and what is simply an accident of manufacture.
