Chinese astrology is the astrological tradition that grew out of ancient China, based on the lunisolar calendar, yin and yang and the five elements. Its best-known form assigns each year one of twelve animals, the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig, combined with an element, forming a sixty-year cycle. The year begins at Chinese New Year, between January 21 and February 20: someone born in January often belongs to the previous animal.
