Here is an excerpt from the summary of what Wicca is, according to a very well-made website:
Wicca is a spiritual system that promotes free thought and the individual as such. It encourages an understanding of the earth and nature. It teaches the responsibility of our actions as the result of our actions.
For all these reasons, there should be no place for cults, and if an individual asks you for money in exchange for their knowledge, run away. A true Wiccan will be happy to talk to you about their religion and, if you are sincere, to teach it to you.
The word “sorcerer” being too overused, we prefer to use the term wicca (lowercase w) to refer to a practitioner of Wicca. The terms wiccan and wiccanne are in fact the French forms of wicca.
Wicca believes that the spirit of the Goddess and the God exists in all things. This means that we must treat all things on Earth as the many aspects of the divine. We strive to honor life in all its visible and invisible manifestations. We see nature as a divine creation. We recognize the elements—Earth, Air, Fire, and Water—as the combination found throughout all creation. From these elements, we gain an understanding of the essence of nature and realize that they are also the essence of our own life.
So Wicca… religion? Philosophy? Lifestyle? Through practice, you learn that it’s a bit of all of the above.
A religion
It is a fact that we worship a God and a Goddess; Wicca is a polytheistic religion. However, we are not a cult, as we do not claim to be the spokesperson for a god, and we do not need intermediaries to make contact with our deities. Loving freedom, we are not missionaries and we do not seek to convert new members. Wicca is tolerant toward other religions, provided that those religions do not practice persecution. We do not worship Satan, nor do we believe in demons. We do not need these Christian creations to compel us to do good through fear, and this form of thinking is foreign to Wicca. We do not perform any sacrifices, as that would violate our Rede: If it harms no one, do what you will.
A philosophy
This study opens our eyes to what surrounds us and to our place on this earth. It helps us put our ego in perspective and direct our attention toward others. Through this study, we become closer to nature, for it is our cradle, it is through her that the Goddess and the God express themselves, and it is still she who provides us with part of the energy for our rituals.
This different approach to nature makes meadows, mountains, forests, and the waterside our temples.
A lifestyle
In practice, our behavior will change to align with the Wiccan Rede. Wiccans are not perfect; we are human, and it is in our nature to make mistakes. It is from these mistakes that we must reflect and correct our behavior to strive for harmony with ourselves, nature, our deities, and others. We cannot call ourselves Wiccans and behave poorly in everyday life. Being Wiccan is a daily commitment, and it is not always easy.
Magic
We use magic as a natural tool that is part of the world. There is no mystery or supernatural phenomenon in magic. It is a natural energy that exists all around us and within us. The Wiccan draws upon it, shapes it, and directs it to achieve a goal. Ritual serves to focus, to visualize, and helps us use this energy. Magic is not Wicca; it is simply part of it. If your goal is to practice magic, you can and must do so without becoming Wiccan.
